Toyota weighs up third Hypercar for WEC
The Japanese manufacturer Toyota is considering running a third car on a satellite basis, similar to Ferrari. However, due to lead times, this plan cannot be implemented before 2026 in the Hypercar class. Toyota’s WEC race director, Rob Leupen, mentioned that the decision-making process is ongoing, inspired by Ferrari’s approach. Toyota aims to follow Ferrari’s customer model with the potential third car, not able to accumulate WEC manufacturer’s points. The potential overlap with Toyota’s hydrogen combustion prototype post-GR010 LMH was also highlighted. Even though the WEC grid is set to expand to 40 cars next year, Toyota is exploring the possibility of a third car in the future, keeping an eye on developments within the Hypercar field.
